Known as the "Harlem Hell Fighters", the once segregated 369th Regiment fought in France during World War I, as an integral part of the French 4th Army because American units would not fight alongside the then all-Black regiment. They cherished the opportunity to fight and fight they did in many major campaigns of the war including the Argonne Forest. Eleven times the 369th was cited for bravery and the entire regiment was awarded France's highest military honor: the Croix de Guerre. “When the 369th marches up 5th Avenue on May 18, they will be celebrating 50 years of marching on New York’s City’s main parade route, 5th Avenue,” said Major General Nathaniel James of the 369th Regiment. “Over the years we have welcomed back veterans from the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Granada, Desert Storm and now Iraq and Afghanistan. We hope everybody remembers, ‘that freedom is not free!’ and to support our troops and veterans.” This year’s sponsors include: Coca Cola of Manhattan, City Sights Bus Company, Con Edison, Kobrand Wine & Spirits, Congressman, Charles B. Rangel, Netties Café and Lee Lee’s Bakery.
